Muscle Development, Metabolism + Weight ManagementUpdated 9 days ago

Research indicates that sulforaphane may aid in weight loss and improve metabolic health by:

  1. Enhancing Leptin Sensitivity

  2. Reducing Fat Accumulation

  3. Improving Glucose Metabolism

  4. Igniting Muscle Growth

  5. Decreasing Inflammation + Improving Microbiome

How It Works:

  1. Leptin Sensitivity

    • Leptin is a hormone that regulates appetite and energy balance by signaling satiation to the brain. Studies have shown that sulforaphane can reverse diet-induced obesity by improving leptin sensitivity, leading to reduced food intake and fat accumulation.

  1. Fat Reduction + Mitochondrial Biogenesis

    • This study presents sulforaphane’s ability to induce the conversion of energy-storing white fat into energy-burning brown-like fat - a process that enhances energy expenditure and reduces the build up of fat.

    • Sulforaphane has been demonstrated to increase mitochondrial function and biogenesis by activating NRF2, resulting in an improvement of cellular energy metabolism and insulin sensitivity.

  1. Glucose Metabolism and Insulin Sensitivity

    • Research indicates that sulforaphane supplementation has a direct metabolic benefit by improving glucose tolerance, reducing fat accumulation and enhancing insulin sensitivity without affecting food intake.

      1. Improvement of glucose tolerance is achieved by sulforaphane’s suppression of glucose production in murine liver cells as demonstrated in this article.

      2. Research indicates that sulforaphane increases insulin sensitivity by reducing ceramide levels - lipid molecules that can contribute to insulin resistance -  via the downregulation of serine palmitoyltransferase 3 (SPTLC3).

      3. Sulforaphane has also been shown to suppress the formation of new fat cells and the synthesis of fat by downregulating key transcription factors and enzymes involved in these processes.

  1. Muscle Growth

    • Sulforaphane has shown the ability to support muscle development by reducing the expression of a protein called myostatin that slows muscle growth. As muscle growth increases and body composition shifts, as does the body’s ability to burn calories and lose weight.

  1. Inflammation + Gut Microbiome
